Preventative Care

Gingivitis, Periodontal Disease, and Dental Health

Gingivitis is a response by the gum tissue caused by plaque building up around the gum line surrounding your teeth. If your brushing and flossing technique is not satisfactory, plaque will build-up at the junction where the teeth come through the gums. This will aggravate the gums causing them to become inflamed, red and swollen, you may also notice they bleed when you brush your teeth.

All you need to do is follow a few simple rules when it comes to looking after the health of your teeth and gums:
- Attend regular recall appointments for examinations and professional cleanings.
- Follow an efficient cleaning routine at home. This should include brushing and flossing.
- Eat a well-balanced diet and limit the frequency of eating sugary and acidic foods.
- To prevent gum disease, you should clean your teeth every day with a small, soft toothbrush. The area where the gum meets the tooth should also be cleaned with the use of dental floss to assist in the removal of plaque. While it is tempting to avoid cleaning your gums when they are bleeding or inflamed, brushing will help improve the situation.

The key aspects of Brunswick Dental Group are ensuring the treatment you receive is efficient, comfortable and effective. This is accomplished through the detection of potential complications in their very early stage. A regular dental examination every 6 to 12 months dependent upon your current level of oral health is as vital for your overall health as a regular check-up with your GP.

The long-term success of your treatment relies on exact diagnosis therefore, before commencing with any treatment programme; a thorough oral examination is conducted along with a complete review of your general health.

We pay close attention to the health of your teeth and gums, your jaw position, your occlusion (how your teeth fit together when you bite), we may also schedule a full set of x-rays should they be necessary.

It is only through regular dental examinations for children, can we ensure their permanent teeth emerge correctly and treat any irregularities promptly. For adults, regular oral examinations can help to prevent tooth loss and the future need for dentures, bridges or teeth implants.

In addition to keeping our records updated, regular examinations with us at Brunswick Dental Group is the most important aspect of preventative dentistry.

What you eat and how often you eat it, is just as important for your teeth and gums as it is for your body. Food and drinks that contain starch and sugar react to the bacteria in your mouth and produce acid. This attacks your tooth enamel which begins causing decay. If not addressed, over time this can lead to periodontal disease, the main cause of tooth loss in adults.

The more frequently you consume products with starch and sugar, the longer your teeth are exposed to decay causing acid. Plaque is the sticky film on the surface of your teeth which attracts food particles, the longer this remains on your teeth the more acid is produced and damage done.

Reducing how often you have sugary or starchy drinks and snacks will help to maintain your optimal oral health considerably. Chewing sugar free gum will stimulate saliva production, your natural neutraliser to mouth acid, however “grazing” on foods throughout the day produces more acid than you can neutralise, rinsing with water after eating can also help.

Smoking can lead to tooth staining, gum disease, tooth loss and in more severe cases, mouth cancer. Most people know that smoking can cause lung and throat cancer, but many people are still unaware that it is one of the main causes of mouth cancer too.

Patients who smoke are much more likely to make bacterial plaque, this type of plaque can lead to gum disease. The gums are affected because smoking causes a lack of oxygen in the bloodstream, so the infected gums cannot heal. Gum disease still remains the most common cause of tooth loss in adults.

People who smoke may also find they are more likely to have bad breath than non-smokers. Fresh breath products such as mints, mouthwashes and gum may help to disguise the problem but only for the short term.

We will carry out a regular examination to make sure your teeth, gums and whole mouth is healthy, we will also refer you to one of our Brunswick dental clinic hygienists who will be able to advise you on thorough cleaning and will be able to monitor your oral health.
